What is a typical day
for you at Career Services?
A typical day for me at UCSB is only five hours long. I work Monday through
Thursday with Friday’s off. My Monday and Wednesday mornings are typically
filled with meetings, planning projects, student appointments, and email. Tuesday
and Thursday are my days to teach ED.164, Introduction to Career Planning so
that takes up most of the time. I also work with students in the Career Resource
Room on Drop In and also work with students doing career and job search research.
What other careers have
you had?
I have worked as a Social Worker for the District Attorney’s Office.
I had a great part time job as the host of “The Women’s Forum” a
weekly one hour radio program covering political and social issues of concern
to women. It was on the air for three years at which time I decided to turn
my energy to writing a book. Unlimited Options: Career Strategies to Last a
Lifetime and Get Clear on Your Career were the end results of two years of
collaboration with on other career counselor and a Chamber of Commerce executive.
I have been the career columnist for the UCSB Alumni magazine Coastlines for
the past ten years and occasionally write for women’, magazines like
Latina and Self.
What makes your current
career at UCSB special for you?
I love the idea of being able to work with students as they exit the university.
Helping them to put their educational and life experiences into perspective
before they go out into the world of work is such a rewarding way to spend
my time here at UCSB. I know that during the years that I have been here, I
have talked to and worked with future senators, composers of great works of
music, engineers who will develop new and exciting medical devices for the
disabled, writers of great literature and award winning scientists, actors
and humanitarians. It doesn’t get much better than that!
When you are not on campus,
what do you like doing?
Spending time with my family, traveling, playing scrabble, doing yoga, and
reading. Oh yeah, I like resting too.
What are your specialty
areas/majors?
All the language and area studies majors as well as the ethnic studies majors,
linguistics. I also have an interest in Public Health, Social Work and other
professional masters degree programs. |
